(1) Minoxidil stimulates circulation and extends the growth in the hair follicle.

(2) All minoxidil-based solutions use forms of alcohol as solvents. Direct exposure to the skin from alcohol can dry out and irritate the scalp. Most forms of minoxidil also contain Propylene Glycol, which can also irritate the skin. The active ingredient in Propecia, Finasteride, reduces the transformation of Testosterone into DHT 2. It is not effective in reducing levels of DHT 1, which is also active in the hair follicle.

The Avacor system includes a Nutricap, which contains natural ingredients that are claimed to reduce levels of DHT.

 

ScalpMed for Men contains an herbal supplement, Nutrisol-RM, which is claimed to reduce production of DHT internally, yet supposedly has no side effects of DHT reduction. DHT is not a bad chemical; it is a hormone necessary for many secondary male sexual characteristics. Suppressing it internally will create side effects as seen with Propecia.

Dr. Lewenberg's Formulas contain Retin-A (Tretinoin), which not only reduces the production of DHT 1 and 2, but also reduces the effects of androgens.
