A new treatment for male hair loss that is far more effective than anything else now available for men and women of all ages, including some with so-called recalcitrant baldness, has been developed by a New York physician, according to a hair loss study published in the international medical journal, Advances In Therapy.

The article, authored by Dr. Adam Lewenberg, reports on results of a two-year tracking study of 2,210 male and female patients with the most common hair loss problems (female and male pattern balding and alopecia areata) as they applied a proprietary hair growth formula, a precise combination of 2% minoxidil and 0.025% tretinoin, developed by Dr. Lewenberg as a hair spray to treat hair loss.

The results indicated that nearly 90% of those patients who applied the spray-on formula four times a day "showed visible- and even cosmetically significant-improvement in hair quality after just three months, with over 85% of male and female patients starting to grow normal hair that is difficult to pull out.

Dr. Lewenberg has been treating hair loss problems for more than 10 years and was one of the early pioneers to use minoxidil, the only drug approved for use in growing hair. But results with minoxidil were most often disappointing, he said, and he began experiments to find a more effective treatment. He discovered that a combination of minoxidil and tretinoin (commonly known as Retin-A) formulated as a hair spray, showed the best results.

Of those hair loss patients who continued the four-dose-per-day application for 1 1/2 to 2 years, 91% had either "grown beautiful, normal hair," or showed "marked hair growth" improvement, the study reports.

Dr. Lewenberg believes that a key factor contributing to the high rate of success of his treatment is that his compound is uniquely formulated as a hair spray.

"As a spray, it is extremely easy to use, it's very safe, it doesn't have any hormonal side effects and it's non-irritating, which means it can be applied more frequently," he noted.

Dr. Lewenberg said he adopted the four-dose-per-day regimen when he noticed that increases in the amount and frequency of dosing improved the effectiveness of the treatment without negative side-effects.

Dr. Lewenberg said he has gradually improved his method over the last several years to the point where it not only produces the high success rates reported in this study, but it also permits easy maintenance, allowing patients to keep their new hair permanently.


The study indicates that after 1 1/2 to 2 years on the four-dose-per-day regimen, a single daily dose of the formula proved sufficient to maintain hair growth in over 90% of the patients and that even this dose could be discontinued for one to two months each year.

"Even some patients who have tried other medical treatments, sometimes for years without success, began re-growing normal hair within months of switching to our regimen," Dr. Lewenberg noted. This included elderly people and patients with a long history of hair loss. Only men who had been losing hair for more than 20 years did not respond to the treatment, the report states.
